Intense Intimidation

Indeed I refer to the Maori war dance known as the ‘Haka’. Many of you have likely witnessed the Haka being performed by the All Blacks Rugby team during their pre-match rituals. Should you have been inspired by this great theatre spectacle, how would you now like to watch it being performed by the native Maoris and thereafter pit your wits at performing it yourself?

Should you find yourself in the town of Rotorua, New Zealand, be sure to book yourself onto the Tamaki Village Maori Cultural experience. The highlight of the evening is undoubtedly the Haka tutorial including the translation of the its fierce words. The one phrase you will be certain to remember is ‘Ka Mate’ (I may die), such is the importance that this dance represents in Maori history of their survival against the enemies.

Furthermore the final move of the Haka involves putting your hands on your ribs and yelling out ‘hi!’ whilst wagging your tongue out (known as the ‘Pukana’) to give a sense that you are ready for the fight. After this insightful experience you may find yourself performing the Haka in front of the mirror or indeed amongst friends and family. It might get perceived as humorous or serious, it all depends how fiery one looks!
